ACTION LETTER #25: March 9th, 2018

--The NRA & March for Our Lives 3/24--

Dear Activist Cartel,

I was a freshman in a nearby Colorado high school when the Columbine shooting happened... and in the anguished aftermath, I tried to start a Brady Campaign chapter in my hometown. Faced with community resistance and a heavy academic workload, I was ultimately unsuccessful. I regret that. It's so incredibly hard to do
what these Parkland teenagers are doing, let alone dealing with the trauma of surviving a massacre. These kids speak to my innermost heart, and I want to do everything I can to support them. 208 school shootings and 19 years since Columbine, the only thing changing is that more kids are dying. Enough is enough.

In a
past letter, I detailed how gun violence is intimately connected to a woman's lack of safety, considering American women are 16 times more likely to be shot and killed than women in other developed countries. With recent events, I now turn our attention to the NRA...

THE NRA (National Rifle Association):
The NRA contributes significant money to politicians who will vote for pro-gun legislation, and just as importantly, they mobilize an entire voter base through advertising and endorsements. To help fuel your conversations:
--Here are
4 great responses to the NRA's favorite talking points.
--Here is a
list of how other countries make it difficult to buy a gun, resulting in dramatically fewer gun deaths than the U.S..
--One of history's most conservative Supreme Court Justice's perspective:

1.) Show up March 24th, 2018 for the March for Our Lives
The least we can do for the kids is show up to their march and let our country hear our roar.
CLICK HERE TO FIND A MARCH NEAR YOU (Below, I included the inspiring, worldwide map of marches happening).
RSVP and then promote the info on social media. Here is also a
list of marches on Facebook. RSVPs help organizers prepare, and FB tells your friends that you're attending, which encourages them to join.

LOS ANGELES: I'm organizing a meet-up with Activist Cartel members and friends!
Meeting time: 8:30am (Walking to Pershing Square at 9am. March starts at 9am.)
Meeting location:
The Sheraton Grand Hotel Lobby
711 S. Hope St., LA, 90017
RSVP: to me by replying to this email (so we don't leave without you). We had a large & lively group for the Women's March, making the whole endeavor so fun and inspiring.

2.) Urge Companies to Cut Ties with the NRA:
Here is a
large list of companies to affirm, such as Delta, Hertz, & United Airlines that have ended their discounts for NRA members. Additionally, Dick's Sporting Goods and Wal-Mart have ended the sale of assault-style rifles, high-capacity magazines, and increased the purchasing age to 21. This is progress!
--Call Visa & Mastercard: urge them to restrict credit card sales for assault weapons.
Here is the contact info and calling script-- it was very easy and quick. PayPal and ApplePay are already doing it!
--Sign Petitions & Call Customer Service:
Petitions are much more effective with businesses than politicians. Here are 4 companies that still need public pressure:
Amazon: Remove NRA-TV from your streaming service & website.
AppleTV: Remove NRA-TV from your streaming service.
Fedex: End your partnership with the NRA (up to 26% discount for members)
Bass Pro Shop & Cabela's: Stop selling assault rifles. They are the only remaining major retailers to be selling them.

3.) Support Students' National School Walkouts:
Get a student involved and register a school to participate. Invite the press/local news to capture it.
March 14th: 2,259 schools have already signed up!
April 20th: Planned intentionally for the anniversary of Columbine.

4.) Financially divest from supporting the gun industry:
--Don't use banks that underwrite the gun industry. Wells Fargo is the #1 bank for gunmakers and the NRA, but
here is a list to reference.
--Review your personal stock portfolios and divest from gun companies such as American Outdoor (NASDAQ: AOBC), Vista Outdoor (VSTO), and Sturm, Ruger & Co. (RGR).

5.) Vote to get NRA endorsed & funded politicians OUT of office.
--If you know a recently inspired 18 year old,
register them to vote
--Only vote for candidates who receive an "F" grade
from the NRA.

These Parkland survivors are
facing death threats from gun enthusiasts. Donald Trump Jr. even "liked" two garbage, conspiracy theory tweets about one of the student survivors. That enrages me, so I'm funneling that energy into helping these inspiring teenagers!
