THE ACTIVIST CARTEL

ACTION LETTER #2: December 1st, 2016

--Sexual Assault--

Dear Activist Cartel,
Wow! Thank you for sharing this with so many people, our membership doubled overnight! This week I'm audaciously diving into educational action, and with it I propose a question to you:

What would we do if 1 in 5 men were constantly being attacked by a bear...
WHAT WOULD WE DO?
At the very least, we would tirelessly talk about the Bear Epidemic.

Yet, 1 in 5 women are sexually assaulted, and we're not talking about it. Maybe you think you're talking about it, as a scary statistic, but...

OBSERVATION FROM 3 WKS POST-ELECTION:
After talking with many friends who went home for Thanksgiving to their conservative families, I was amazed by a recurring theme. Women, for the first time in their life, felt motivated to share with their father that they have been sexually assaulted or groped.
These fathers were very surprised. They truly didn't know how close this issue hits home, because we don't truly talk about it. Male violence is the single biggest threat to my life... so why isn't this a priority for our government or even the people who love us?

ACTION ITEM:
-If you are a woman, have a conversation with a man or several men in your life about the harassment, groping, or even violence that you've experienced. I know this might be a lot to ask. It's intense, I get it. But if we don't start speaking up... no one will know and no one will care. They will care when they know it has affected someone they love. Maybe even ask him to join our cartel.
-If you are a man, ask a woman or several women in your life, this question: "Has a man ever made you feel physically unsafe, or touched you without your consent?" Offer love, safety, and support when she shares. Women will often be very appreciative that you care enough to ask.

thousands of responses to Kelly Oxford's tweet sharing assault experiences when the Trump video was released.

Communication is a starting point. My hope for the future is that when a presidential candidate talks casually about how he sexual assaults women, our country doesn't elect him, because it's personal. Because you know your daughter/friend/sister/girlfriend has been affected... 1 in 5 of them, at least.

Please feel free to share this. No more silence.
Making change, one step at a time!
Chelsey
