Resistance Manual's Legislative Actions for Women's Rights/Reproductive Justice

ACTION LETTER #10: March 23rd, 2017

--Online Harassment--

Dear Activist Cartel,

We had a big group at the LA rally for the Women's Strike! I encourage you to check out this international recap of the day on
Small Victories. This website sends out a weekly email with small victories within "the resistance." It'll keep you motivated to take action!

Recent news has me turning our attention to:

Whether it's stalking, hate speech, doxxing, revenge porn, or threats of violence, anyone who spends time on social media has witnessed
women being harassed.

Recently a private, male-only FB group, "Marines United," was found soliciting and sharing hundreds, possibly thousands, of naked photographs of female service members and veterans. Posted without consent, many of these women were on active duty and identified by their full name, rank and military duty station. Since 2015, 30,000 men (membership restricted to Marines, Navy corpsmen, & British Royal Marines) have subscribed to this site, contributed obscene comments, or stayed silent to the abuse.

That is until 2 weeks ago when US Marine veteran
Thomas Brennan exposed them. Now the U.S. Department of Defense is investigating, and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is fiercely holding General Robert Neller accountable. However, Thomas Brennan and his family are unfortunately receiving death threats. Thomas Brennan is a true hero and an inspiring representative of how men should be speaking out against misogyny and harassment. We need to affirm a man like him more and more until it becomes the standard. With proud enthusiasm, I can say that we have a lot of men in The Activist Cartel—men not only willing to support women but also to speak up for them when their voices aren't being heard. Thankfully in response to this atrocity, the most senior enlisted active duty Marine, Sgt. Maj. Ronald L. Green, spoke up and said:

1.) Send a thank you letter to Marines veteran Thomas Brennan to offset the negativity and death threats he's receiving for
his exposé. 1 man, out of 30,000, decided to speak out.
--Or Mail:
Thomas James Brennan

2.) Report Online Harassment/Trolling as a bystander! (takes 20 seconds)
--Twitter, Instagram, and FB all have super easy ways to report harassment as a bystander. It doesn't have to be on your page, just press the arrow or 3 dots to "Report" or swipe left on inappropriate comments.
--If it's a personal attack, take a screenshot of the comment/post before you report it.
--You can also report a Twitter incident, personal or bystander, on
Trollbusters and they'll respond quickly with support.
--By doing nothing, we become desensitized and the abuse continues.

3.) POLITICAL: There is so much happening, so fast, that political actions must be addressed. Here are some resources and streamlined actions.
--Text/Fax your Representatives with
Resistbot: (takes 2 minutes)
Simply text "resist" to 50409 and follow the prompts. Your text will immediately be turned into a fax that's sent to your representatives. Messages can be very quick and simple!
--Important Current Issues to Text/Fax/Call about--
a) Block ACA replacement: It will defund Planned Parenthood.
b) Oppose Trump's budget: It cuts programs like Meal on Wheels and humanities programs (NEA, NEH, PBS, NPR) even though they account for less than 0.02% of the federal budget.
c) Georgia Special Election:
Find GA friends on FB who live in or know someone in Congressional District 6 (suburb north of Atlanta) and ask them to vote on April 18th for Jon Ossoff for House of Representatives to replace GOP Tom Price's vacated seat.
d) Use
Resistance Manual to find and track progress of legislation:
--Organized by specific issue (Climate, Immigration, LGBTQ Equality, etc.), you can find current Legislative Actions with specific Senate(S) and House(HR) Bill Numbers to ask representatives to vote Yes ("Supports Equity and Justice") or vote No ("Harmful Legislation"). Check out the example pictured below

I know that there are so many important issues facing us right now. The only thing you can do is take action.
Not going to be silent!
